I'm paying a Kenku Bard and I made her a poet. She uses poems and scriptures she has read. She has a roommate that, for lore reasons, reads poems to her so she can mimic them later. Her normal speech is very broken and sometimes hard to understand but when it comes to reading her poems or combat her speech is clear and concise. She's College of Eloquence so sometimes she'll Mimic her teachers too.

I had some ogres doing blood magic, pulling blood elementals from an enemy caster's veins and I had an encounter start with the party get automatically magically held in place, and they had to do skill checks to either break free or unravel the magic effect before they could start the fight proper, while the bad guys powered up each round they weren't engaged in combat

I think we need to get Ginny more swords so she can insert them in videos more often.

the most chaotic version of this is letting your players come up with whatever kind of magical bullshit they want and then use it against them "i'm immune to fire magic because i'm wearing a red scarf" and then slap them with a boss wearing rubies in its jewels or whatever piece of red clothing you can fit on them

Yeah, back in the day, researching new spells was the main downtime activity of wizards.

It makes sense story wise that wizards should be able to create their own spells. I'd consider them like hackers, taking a system and stretching its capabilities to the limit.

Back when I was running AD&D games, I created a spell that was a variant of the popular 2nd level Web spell: Constricting Web as a 3rd level spell. It had all the normal Web effects...but the web strands would tighten around those caught in it, squeezing them for minor damage every round on their turn while stuck in it.

I’m toying with the idea of a level 1 spell that lets one summon a CR 1/2 Shadow (which could be overpowered due to the creature being so powerful it could give a level 20 Na’Krasha nightmares), a 9th level ritual that lets one raise an army of the dead for at least 24 hours, and a spell that makes an enemy’s head explode when the damage reduces their HP to 0. Other than that, I don’t know if this has been addressed in the 2024 PHB, but I’ve considered redesigning True Strike where it takes a bonus action instead of a regular action just because I think it would make the spell less useless.

I want to know what those 7 books were that you held up. Were those really all 3rd party spell books?

Here's how I allow spellcrafting: -Wizards (the spell learning classes) cannot craft spells, maybe at a very high level, but youre a student of the arcane, you cast what is taught to you. -Clerics/Paladins/Warlocks (the divine spellcasters) can't craft spells. They receive a specific set of blessings/powers from their patrons and can't just draw upon new powers themselves; they have to ask for them. -Sorcerers and Druids can craft spells. Sorcerers can do whatever they want, they literally ARE magic. There's no limitation other than their skill. Druids can create a limited variety of spells as long as they draw upon magic that is in their environment. -Bards are just wizards, but lame, however, if you can actually come up with a good poem for your spell, I will most definitely allow it.

I made a warlock spell called “shadow” where the caster sinks into their own shadow on a wall or similar and are then able to move along surfaces, under doors etc

That's why: 1. I love the scribes wizard subclass 2. I allow my high level (17-20) lvl player spellcasting characters to invent a spell that will be used in further campaigns

I personally love it when players have the initiative to come to me with a homebrew spell idea. More often than not, its extremely OP so we definitely cut it back and work on it together but all in all it makes for a great learning experience for everyone! My cleric had this idea about a spell that takes hp from one person and transfers it to another so we made aa cool homebrew spell called Life Insurance that does just that and also scales up at higher levels. I even created story elements that the spell is a part of so it fits in nicely :)

I'm playing an artillerist and after an arc on a ship, I developed a divination called Artillerist's Sight. You cast it on a siege weapon and then the user can see a ballistic arc through the air when preparing to fire it (giving advantage on attack rolls). At 4th level, if I ever hit level 13, it extends that advantage even to long range shots instead of just canceling the disadvantage

I love working with my players to reskin existing spells. For example, on of the PCs in my 3.5e game is a bard loosely based on Joker. He just gained the spell Stinking Cloud, except he calls it "Laughing Gas". It still imposes the nauseated condition, but the condition is described as being due to uncontrollable cackling rather than digestive distress. Favorite spell idea that I never got around to statting out was when I had a dwarf battlesmith cleric PC in my game. We talked about creating the spell "Summon Anvil" so he would be able to perform smithwork in the field. The spell would also allow the anvil to be summoned in mid air, for example above the head of an enemy.

A couple of years ago, I played a Shadow Sorcerer/Great Old One Warlock whose gimmick was that all his "spells" were actually just him ripping open a portal to the Shadowfell and grabbing a horrific little creature (picture all the gnarly non-humanoid ghosts that show up in the "everything is going wrong" montage in every Ghostbusters movie) that creates the spell's effect and disappears back to the Shadowfell when the spell ends. So I came up with a cantrip to replace taking something like Mage Hand or Prestidigitation and give me more of that summoner vibe. Plus, I gave them some "ill-behaved pet" vibes like knocking stuff over or eating the object you wanted them to fetch. *Iwen's Minute Monsters* Conjuration cantrip *Casting Time:* 1 action *Range:* 30 feet *Components:* V, S *Duration:* Up to one minute Calling out the name of a tiny creature from another plane, you bring it to your current plane to complete a simple task. You create one of the following magical effects within range: * *Glow.* The creature glows or produces faint flames or sparks, shedding dim light of a color of your choice in a five-foot cube. * *Eat.* The creature eats one tiny, nonmagical object that weighs less than 5 pounds and that isn't being worn or carried. * *Ruin.* The creature scratches, bites, spews slime over, or otherwise causes minor cosmetic damage to one object no larger than one foot on each side, or it befouls up to 1 cubic foot of food, causing it to taste and smell disgusting. If possible, it may knock the object over as part of this effect. * *Speak.* The creature makes a loud call that can be heard up to 100 feet away. * *Fetch.* The creature picks up one tiny, nommagical object that weighs less than 5 pounds and that isn't being worn or carried and brings it to you. When you give this command, there is a 50% chance the creature will take the Eat action instead. Even if that’s not inventing whole new spells, let casters do creative and cool things with magic. For example, once with one of my wizards I was allowed to absorb the magical energy from a construct’s power core to regain spell slots. And as a bard in wild beyond the witch light, I was allowed to use the Dragon’s breath spell to copy Sir Talavar’s Euphoria Breath seeing as it’s a dragon’s breath weapon even though it’s not an option for the dragon’s breath spell. And once I was playing a blood domain cleric and we were fighting vampires. Because of that specific divine domain I was allowed to upclass Ceremony, using the Create Holy Water option to give my blood the properties of holy water, negating the vampires’ ability to heal by drinking my blood.

I love alternate version of the core requisite spells. I have a Magus in a pathfinder game that uses Shadow Vortex, which is basically fireball, but looks like a swirling vortex of shadows and lightning and does half and half Lightning/Cold damage. Also, it's area is centered on the caster so the use-case is different.

My GM has been letting me make my own spells since day 1, and honestly, it's helped my own GMing a ton. It helped me learn how to properly balance effects, damage, spell level, and economy so that my own game, I felt comfortable making almost the entire game from scratch, modifying existing monsters, and made me a better player. Of course, now I'm completely insufferable, with half my spellbook being made up of homebrewed spells I never take because they were terrible. I also have a very critical eye toward other peoples' homebrew because of what I've learned

I like to dig out my old 1st and 2nd ed books and look for spells that did not come forward into 5e. Those can be reworked easily in most cases. Older players (like me) might remember them. The younger players will be all "Wow!". I especially like the old "Bee" cantrip for breaking concentration.

I wonder how you would make Ancient Death Rancor in D&D. It would be a Necromancy spell for sure, but beyond that, I have no idea.

I wholeheartedly agree, I love making new spells or modifying preexisting ones. Sometimes I just ask the dm if I can change the damage type to better suit my character’s aesthetic, or create something new together!

In my Sunday game, I had the idea that the party’s wizard could take the Wall of Force spell and modify it, eventually inventing a new spell called Nemezark’s Naval Ram.

Great video Ginny. Totally agree with all the points you made on home-brew spell use. Like that you touched on old-school 1st edition spell creation. Back in the day I allowed players to use spells from the Great Net Spell Book and the Great Net Prayer Book. Nearly 2000 completely different spells from Cantrips through 10th level deity-level in effect. The players loved it, but you had to provide copies of the spell when handed out, as they did not have PDF files... just hard copy. 😀 There are a couple places on-line that you can still get a copy of them. It's great source material if you want ideas for new spells.
